TARRYTOWN (Westchester County) -- On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m., Officials from the Village of Tarrytown, Westchester County, Scenic Hudson and developer National RE/sources will be joined by other project supporters in a groundbreaking for the new Scenic Hudson RiverWalk Park at Tarrytown -- a site once marked by heavy industry and pollution. When completed in spring 2010, the park will provide new access to the river, recreational facilities and open space against the dramatic backdrop of the Hudson and Tappan Zee Bridge.
The new park will stretch along 3,200 feet (or 0.6 mile) of the village's Hudson riverfront and link to the village's Pierson Park and the 25-acre brownfield that is being redeveloped as Hudson Harbor (formerly known as Ferry Landings) by National RE/sources. The site is adjacent to a Metro-North rail road station, making it convenient to visitors from Westchester and beyond. To make way for the parkāthe village, county, Scenic Hudson and National RE/sources collaborated on relocating an asphalt plant so that river access on the site could be opened for the first time in 80 years. Contamination was remediated and the shoreline stabilized while public meetings were hosted by the village and Scenic Hudson so that residents could have a say in the park's design.
Directions: In Tarrytown, take West Main Street and head toward Hudson River (follow signs for Senior Center). Follow to parking for Pierson Park. Groundbreaking is on waterfront, immediately north of Pierson Park.
Scenic Hudson works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital resource for residents and visitors. A crusader for the valley since 1963, we are credited with saving fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project and launching the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Today with more than 10,000 ardent supporters, we are the largest environmental group focused on the Hudson River Valley. Our team of experts combines land acquisition, support for agriculture, citizen-based advocacy and sophisticated planning tools to create environmentally healthy communities, champion smart economic growth, open up riverfronts to the public and preserve the valley's inspiring beauty and natural resources. www.scenichudson.org
