Clara Lou Gould: Hudson Valley Hero
During Clara Lou Gould's tenure (1990-2007) as mayor of Beacon, Dutchess County, the city passed a $1-million open-space bond. She saved from development a 100-plus acre property at the base of Fishkill Ridge and collaborated with Scenic Hudson to create a park at the 80-acre former University Settlement Camp. She also championed Main Street's renewal and economic revival along Beacon's shoreline.
Clara Lou Gould
“It's important for everybody to have open space, especially in a city. Residents need nearby places where they can relax and explore nature, while visitors have additional reasons for spending time here.”
