Two Scenic Hudson Parks on Hudson Valley's Best List

The October 2007 issue of Hudson Valley magazine features the publication's annual roundup of what's best in the Hudson Valley. This year Scenic Hudson has been honored by having two of its parks make the list of just 20 destinations that offer fun in "The Great Outdoors."

The 0.7-acre property adjacent to the Cold Spring train station was named the magazines' pick for "Best Pocket Park." The magazine cites the park as a place you could walk around in the time it takes to count to 10 but advises readers they won't want to. Described by Scenic Hudson as a "small property with big views and important history," the park features benches where people can become inspired by the majesty of the Hudson River and views of West Point's Constitution Island. There also is a launch for canoes and kayaks and an array of native trees and plants.

Honored for having the "Best New Walking Trail" and named for the legendary environmentalist and Scenic Hudson spiritual leader, this 250-acre park features the dramatic ridgeline visible immediately south of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. There are two miles of carriage trails that make for a nice stroll, and the elevation provides great views. From the property one can see south to the Hudson Highlands and north past the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge. The park also is important to views from the river's opposite side. Particularly the wooded ridgeline defines what one sees from Locust Grove and the Poughkeepsie shoreline. Scenic Hudson purchased the property in 2003 and established the park. The group sold it to New York State and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in 2007 but continues to manage the park and make improvements there.

Fall is a great time to explore 28 parks and preserves Scenic Hudson owns and maintains up and down the river. Visit our parks pages for more information.
