"I strongly applaud Gov. Paterson's choice of Kirsten Gillibrand as New York's new senator. When it comes to the environment and preserving land, she truly gets it right," said Ned Sullivan, president of Scenic Hudson.

"She understands that sustainable economic growth in the Hudson Valley depends on balancing development with protecting our magnificent and irreplaceable natural resources. The Mid-Hudson Valley Economic Summit she is hosting in Hyde Park on Monday is an excellent example of her leadership in attracting suitable "green" jobs to the region.

"Rep. Gillibrand has been a champion of maintaining the viability of farming, a $530-million industry in the Hudson Valley, and has delivered federal funding to help her district's communities revitalize their downtowns. She also recognizes the valley's future prosperity hinges in part on tourism, which brings $4.5 billion in revenue to the region each year. She has staunchly supported creation of a Hudson Valley welcome center in Hyde Park, a joint project of Scenic Hudson, the National Park Service, the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and the town.

"Scenic Hudson and I look forward to continuing our work with Sen. Gillibrand to achieve our shared goals for the Hudson Valley," added Mr. Sullivan.

Scenic Hudson works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital resource for residents and visitors. A crusader for the valley since 1963, we are credited with saving fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project and launching the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Today with more than 25,000 ardent supporters, we are the largest environmental group focused on the Hudson River Valley. Our team of experts combines land acquisition, support for agriculture, citizen-based advocacy and sophisticated planning tools to create environmentally healthy communities, champion smart economic growth, open up riverfronts to the public and preserve the valley's inspiring beauty and natural resources. To date Scenic Hudson has created or enhanced more than 50 parks, preserves and historic sites up and down the Hudson River and conserved more than 28,000 acres.
