How do you identify a brownfield? Look for signs of potential contamination such as: |

Old, dilapidated buildings |

Broken windows and glass |

Garbage or rubble |
|
|
Old barrels or storage tanks |
|
|
Old electrical equipment |
|
|
Sickly or no vegetation |
|
|
Unusual odors |
|
|
Oddly-colored soil and/or water |
|
|
When performing a visual assessment of a site, be sure not to trespass on private property. Take an inventory from a nearby road or public area.
Keep in mind that the characteristics listed above indicate the potential for contamination, but do not automatically mean the site is a brownfield. |
