Save Energy
Help save energy because when demand is lowered significantly, expanding or building new power plants may not be necessary.

Please use the following tips for energy and money savings:
  • Eliminate Wasted Energy - Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Additional savings can come from unplugging electronic devices and charges when you are not using them.

  • Be Smart When Using Appliances - When you can avoid it, don't run appliances during peak hours. Use the warm or cold settings when doing laundry, and always use cold water for rinsing clothes. Line dry when possible or use a clothes dryer only when it's full. Moisture-sensing settings also conserve energy. Likewise, air dry dishes in your dishwasher and run it only when full.

  • Install Energy-Efficient Lighting and Appliances - Regular incandescent bulbs should be replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs, which used nearly 75 percent less electricity and last up to seven years. Consider replacing appliances as well because models with top energy ratings pay for themselves in a relatively short time.

  • Insulate Your Home - Add to your current insulation and make sure to plug leaks around windows and doors. Also you can install foam gaskets behind outlet covers.

  • Turn Up Your Thermostat - During warm months set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. Ceiling or room fans allow you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room. The same principals work during cold months with your heating needs.

  • Wrap Your Hot Water Heater - If your heater is more than 10 years old, an insulating blanket will make a noticeable difference.

  • Install Low-Flow Water Nozzles - Using these items saves not only electricity but water as well.

  • Consider Long-Term Energy Investments - Upgrade to energy-efficient windows, install an attic fan system or have your heating and air conditioning ducts tested and sealed for leaks.
Advocate for a Clean, Safe State Energy Plan
Communicate with your family, friends and neighbors to let them know how important it is that our state has a viable, enforceable blueprint for energy-sector decision-making. See Overview for more information. There are other important audiences who need to hear your point of view, including public officials and your local paper.

The editorial page is a powerful vehicle for voicing your ideas, so write a letter to the editor calling for our leaders to follow through with a detailed energy plan. Write another note, or send one you have submitted to the paper, to your state and local leaders. Use our printable list for contact information.
