Reports to: Community Education Coordinator
Mission of Position: The SCA member will spend equal time throughout the term working to help advance Scenic Hudson’s education and public outreach and programming goals at Scenic Hudson parks.
Background: Scenic Hudson has protected more than 24,000 acres in nine counties, and created or enhanced 40 parks in the Hudson River Valley for public enjoyment—several in communities that previously had little or no access to the Hudson River. Many of these parks are managed in partnership with state and local governments, and other nonprofit organizations. Scenic Hudson parks will connect people to Scenic Hudson and the Hudson Valley. They will be models of environmental stewardship that will teach and inspire.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management or related field or equivalent knowledge acquired through professional experience.
- Previous experience working in environmental education and/or with children/students preferred.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite—Word, Excel, Access.
- Must be well organized, possess strong interpersonal communication skills, detail oriented, and supportive of Scenic Hudson’s mission.
- Comfortable working in an outdoor setting and physically able to walk 4+miles a day over varied terrain and able to lift 40 lbs.
- Experience and comfort with light trail maintenance.
- Ability to work well independently as well as in a team setting.
Responsibilities Include:
- Assist Education Coordinator to identify and collaborate with partners to build and evaluate a program aimed at increasing educational opportunities for school groups in Scenic Hudson parks.
- Assist Education Coordinator to develop and implement a wide array of environmentally themed educational field trips for school groups at Scenic Hudson parks and in-class visits.
- Assist in the development of educational resources and materials for teachers and students that will encourage environmental stewardship; teach and inspire about the Hudson River Valley.
- Assist Community Outreach Manager and parks team staff to plan and implement 24 events in Scenic Hudson parks.
- Assist in developing and distributing quarterly park event calendars each year.
- Prepare materials for public outreach events and maintain accurate documentation records about events.
- Attend public events and assist in developing appropriate outreach strategies to bolster community support and appreciation for the groundbreaking Long Dock Beacon project.
- Assist in advancing Scenic Hudson’s membership program and attend public events and meetings as needed in support of the organization’s goals and mission.
- Assist parks team with outreach and projects as needed.
- Participate in all required SCA Corps-wide trainings and service projects, as well as project evaluation and reporting.
- Other duties as assigned.
PLEASE NOTE: This position is an SCA Hudson Valley Conservation Corps Amerircorps internship. The successful candidate will serve as a corps member with the SCA stationed at Scenic Hudson for 52 weeks.
