Riverfronts Reclaimed
by Andy Bicking
It is time to celebrate. Scenic Hudson, Inc.'s Fifth Annual Great River Sweep will take place April 20-28. In the event's short history, volunteers have removed more than 200 tons of trash from Hudson River
shorelines and tributaries. Hundreds of groups and more than 4,000 individuals have gathered for a common cause and rallied to make their communities a better place.
In acknowledgement of these great accomplishments, the Washington D.C.-based Waterfront Center this fall awarded Great River Sweep volunteers its prestigious Clearwater Citizens Award. The international honor recognizes grass-roots efforts that promote beneficial use and protection of local waterfronts.
New to this year's event is the volunteer position of regional manager. Although new in name this supervisory post is one that many cleanup coordinators have fulfilled before by networking with peers at neighboring cleanup sites. For 2002 regional managers are working directly with Scenic Hudson staff to make cleanups more effective and better coordinated.
Volunteers this year also can expect support from regional waste management companies and agencies. The Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency has already offered free disposal of burnable trash collected within Dutchess County.
