We Appreciate the Irony and the Stock
By Janice Holzman
When a regional non-profit takes on a giant multi-national corporation like the General Electric Co., the battle is bound to be uphill. The challenge, however, makes each triumph extra sweet.
Scenic Hudson, Inc. has reached a crucial stage in our intense, decade-long battle to force GE to clean up the health-threatening PCBs it discharged into the Hudson River. With Scenic Hudson's annual operating budget being a fraction of the money GE has poured into its advertising campaign to sway public opinion, the playing field is not level.
Recently, and much to our excitement, an anonymous donorcontacted Scenic Hudson's Development Office stating he was "an angry GE stockholder who wanted to make a substantial gift of the company's stock" to help push for a Hudson River PCB cleanup. His contribution of 300 shares has been earmarked for Scenic Hudson's Environmental Quality Program and will be used in ongoing grassroots advocacy promoting a decision by the Bush Administration to advance a thorough removal of PCBs from the Hudson River (Please see PCB Cleanup Campaign).

This gift is reminiscent of Scenic Hudson's origins, when we were embroiled in a fight against Con Edison to save Storm King Mountain from becoming home to the world's largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant. At that time supporters included stockholders of Con Edison who donated their dividend checks to fund our lawsuit against the company.
Individual contributions such as these enable us to take on GE and to continue our vital work in the Hudson Valley. |
