Dutchess County:
Beacon Landing, Beacon

To help create safe public access to the Beacon riverfront, artist George Trakas began stabilizing the shoreline, reconstructing the historic bulkhead, building steps to the river and erecting a handicapped-accessible fishing pier. This project is funded in part by the Anita Hart Balter Creative Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Department of State and The Lila Acheson and DeWitt Wallace Fund for the Hudson Highlands, established by the founders of The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. The work will be completed by spring 2003.

Madam Brett Park, Beacon
Thanks to the team of 40 hard-working volunteers that spent April 12 making this Fishkill Creek park more visitor-friendly and attractive. They cleared new trails, made the Tioronda Falls deck universally accessible and built a new footbridge and stone retaining wall to grace the trail. The team included members of AmeriCorps, Youth Resource Development Corp. and Scenic Hudson, Inc. Thank you also to Beacon Terminals, Inc., which provided lunch for the crew.

Westchester County:
Hudson Highlands Gateway Park, Cortlandt

Scenic Hudson, the Town of Cortlandt and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference are mapping and evaluating existing unmarked paths on this 352-acre property to create a trail system that provides hiking and viewing opportunities and protects sensitive areas.

TIP: If you or your group or organization would like to volunteer in a Scenic Hudson park or preserve, please call Andy Bicking at (845) 473-4440, ext. 232, or send an e-mail to abicking@scenichudson.org.

Ulster County:
Esopus Meadows Point Preserve, Esopus

The Hudson River Valley Greenway has designated this 100-acre riverfront preserve an official part of the Hudson River Water Trail. It will be one of more than 30 shoreline rest areas for boaters. A boat landing for nonmotorized watercraft and a trail to Esopus Meadows Environmental Center are scheduled for spring 2003 completion.

Putnam County:
West Point Foundry Preserve, Cold Spring

To guide long-term plans for this historically rich site, the industrial archaeology graduate program at Michigan Technological University soon will make available its findings on remaining foundry structures. Michigan Tech graduate student Elizabeth Norris is developing a five-year research plan and will lead archaeological fieldwork here this summer. Laser transit technology will record the location of ruins visible on the surface, and a digitized map will be created for interpretive and planning purposes.
