Imagine walking on a beautifully landscaped Hudson River shoreline path with stunning views of the Tappan Zee Bridge and New York City skyline. Picture seniors gathering for a special event, children playing ball and a kayak launching gracefully into the river. Welcome to the Village of Irvington's Scenic Hudson Park at Irvington.
This once contaminated lumberyard was transformed into a Hudson River jewel thanks to determined Irvington citizens and a team of Scenic Hudson's experienced land preservation professionals. In 1996, threatened by rampant residential development, the village consulted residents, committed to their vision for a public waterfront and called on Scenic Hudson to rescue the property.
In addition to involving the community in early planning stages and garnering remarkable support from residents, Irvington made a substantial $4.7 million commitment to clean up and develop the site. Scenic Hudson then purchased the property, investing $5.4 million. New York State contributed more than $4.4 million, including the first Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act "brownfields" funding. The park opened to an enthusiastic public in June 2001.
Co-owned by the village and Scenic Hudson, the waterfront site is a popular gathering place, offering more than four acres of lawns, softball and soccer fields, playgrounds, a non-motorized boat launch and an open riverside trail. And Westchester County renovated an office building to serve as a center for the village's extensive senior programming. |
