Send the Cement Plant Packing
Opponents of the St. Lawrence Cement (SLC) plant -- which would spew health-damaging pollution across the valley and Northeast -- were instrumental in the NYS Department of State (DOS) extending its public comment period until March 1. This agency oversees federal coastal regulations.
If the DOS decides the proposed plant would damage the Hudson River coast, the coal-burning monstrosity cannot be built. Send your letter to the DOS by March 1.
Bad for Our Health, Bad for Business
No surprise -- if a plant makes people sick and blights the environment, it also will harm the economy.
While SLC's propaganda promises that its cement making will breed prosperity, this company and the cement industry have failed to do so locally or nationally. |

Even its own applications to NY state say, "...in total, there is no new net spending in the regional economy in the future."
To counter SLC's disinformation, we recently issued a comprehensive report on the economic climate in Columbia County, where the plant would be built.
Conclusions? Jobs, wages and real estate values are strongly up and rising. Downtown reinvestment and the second-home market are economic engines. An ugly, pollution-spewing cement complex would blight this new, clean economy and hurt taxpayers.
We have better options than a coal-fired cement plant. |
