n Scenic Hudson's 40th anniversary year, we feel a great sense of accomplishment. I hope you -- one of our vital supporters -- share this sense of pride.
A champion of our work, you are keenly aware that we face growing challenges in protecting and restoring our American Heritage River and its magnificent landscape.
The biggest threat today is the St. Lawrence Cement plant. To whitewash its proposal for an industrial city that would spew 20 million pounds of toxins over the valley and Northeast every year, the company has spent a staggering $54 million.
After five years it has none of 17 required permits thanks to united opposition from Scenic Hudson and 35 other groups. But donations from our supporters are critical for the next stages of this fight.
Our Other Priorities Include:
- Both individuals and government must increase funding to save vanishing open space and create more spectacular parks.
- Riverfront communities under extreme development pressure need assistance to turn unplanned or developer-driven projects into smart economic growth. Pressing needs exist in Yonkers, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Poughkeepsie and Kingston.
- We must increase efforts to restore the health of the river -- an incredible ecosystem and economic engine.
The PCB cleanup, sewer-overflow pollution and antiquated power plants are some key issues. Scenic Hudson brings to bear four decades of experienced leadership, a staff of 50 experts and boundless passion to succeed.
But our greatest strengths are you and other committed allies. Show your love for the river that flows through your life every day -- go to www.scenichudson.org to donate and take action. We are depending upon your support.
