Youth and civic groups, municipalities, boating clubs, families, churches and individuals all pitch in. They pick up tons of riverside trash, pluck debris floating near shorelines and spruce up cherished public parks. It all started in 1998 with a letter from an impassioned six-year-old: "I see trash floating in the Hudson River. Is there any way you can help me?"
Today Scenic Hudson's Great River Sweep engages hundreds of communities up and down the river. We have mobilized 30,000 volunteers to remove 300 tons of trash and conducted important litter surveys that are helping advance state litter reduction programs. Committed supporters have made the Sweep the valley's largest volunteer event.

The 2005 Great River Sweep begins April 16 and ends April 24. Got a few hours for your river? There are hundreds of cleanups looking for volunteers. Chances are there is a cleanup scheduled near you. |
