Cement Plant Victory; Ruling Heralds Bright Future for Valley
A coalition of environmental groups and committed citizens like you stopped a massive industrial complex from damaging the health, beauty and economic vitality of our communities.

Your donations helped us champion our cause with state regulators and the public. We used your investment to pay for legal, economic, visual-impact and other experts essential to our victory.

What dealt the knockout blow against a corporation that spent $60 million trying to get its project approved? ECONOMICS.

Scenic Hudson, with the Hudson Valley Preservation Coalition, Friends of Hudson and The Olana Partnership, fought for a positive alternative to the plant -- economic opportunity that builds on, rather than degrades, our region's world-class natural, cultural and historic assets.
A deeply affirmative vision of the valley's future. The New York Times, Editorial, April 24, 2005, lauding the state's decision against the plant.
We documented an emerging post-industrial economy yielding growing prosperity in Columbia County and up and down the valley. We presented compelling facts about diverse economic engines -- such as revitalization of Hudson's main street, smaller manufacturing, construction trades and a booming real estate market -- that are vital for quality of life.

Gov. George E. Pataki, Secretary of State Randy Daniels and the staff of the State Department's Coastal Resources Division agreed. We thank them for their strong, forward-looking decision against the plant. This victory can guide all of us fighting for the health and character of our communities.

ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC VITALITY IN HUDSON AND BEYOND
How do we build on our momentum? By launching an exciting initiative that could re-establish historic South Bay as a vibrant waterfront in Hudson.

Responding to an invitation from community leaders, Scenic Hudson's ecologists and planning professionals are working to transform an area dotted with junkyards and half-operating industrial facilities into a success story. We see great potential to reclaim South Bay's commercial, residential and environmental vitality.

We are advancing similar work in places such as Hyde Park, Kingston, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Yonkers. Take a peek at how we tackle such ambitious projects, www.ScenicHudson.org.
