President's Letter
Together We Are a Potent Force
dropcap
am extremely optimistic after the recent defeat right here in our valley of a massive industrial complex proposed by the world's second-largest cement conglomerate.

You are a big part of why in the Hudson Valley the 40-year movement to protect the environment and world-class beauty of our region is creating healthy places to live and work.

Following six years of pushing its health-threatening proposal, St. Lawrence Cement (SLC) abandoned its plans. New York Secretary of State Randy Daniels ruled in April that the project would irreparably harm our Hudson River coastline. This victory marks the beginning of a dynamic era for the environmental movement.

PROVIDING THE SEEDS FOR 21ST-CENTURY ACTIVISM
It is fitting that our region -- credited with launching modern environmentalism -- should provide the seeds for 21st-century activism.

Working with Friends of Hudson and The Olana Partnership, we crafted powerful legal challenges to SLC's blighting and bloated project and used the Internet, engaging public forums and the media to rally citizens. Combining these approaches with persuasive economic analysis creates a powerful new model to fuel further accomplishments.

The state's decision explicitly articulated a vision of waterfront development aligned with Scenic Hudson's work in communities throughout the valley -- from Yonkers to Peekskill to Hudson.

The ruling cited statistics from our economic study that point to the value of the Hudson and its waterfront as a public and natural resource. This research was developed with The Hudson Valley Preservation Coalition. We are thrilled by this emphatic endorsement.

I urge you not to get sidelined by this victory. Right now future parks wait for you to stop the bulldozer of sprawl barreling toward them. Neglected waterfronts need your help to revitalize and fuel stable, clean local economies. Your drinking water needs you to defend it from toxic pollution.

Stay with us on the front line as we fight for a clean, healthy Hudson River Valley. Donate and Take Action at www.ScenicHudson.org. Our families and our river deserve it.
