Write a Letter
Use our printable list to write a letter to:
  • President George W. Bush: Tell President George W. Bush that his administration's EPA made the right decision to clean up Hudson River PCBs. Thank him for his support of the comprehensive plan and ask him to make sure the project suffers no compromises or delays. Also signal your support for an aggressive and effective Superfund program.

  • EPA Administrator Steve Johnson: Tell him we expect the agency to continue to side with science over political pressure. Let him know you support a comprehensive Hudson River PCB cleanup, and that you applaud the agency's decision to go forward with the project. Tell him a timely environmental and economic revitalization of the upper Hudson River is needed, no more delays are acceptable and it is anticipated that the project will be kept on track and begin in 2006.

  • Gov. George E. Pataki: Express your strong appreciation. His personal advocacy for cleaning up our American Heritage River was a major reason the EPA turned away from flawed compromise ideas and instead announced a comprehensive cleanup. Ask him to continue championing the project to make sure we don't have any more delays. Indicate that his continued support is critical and that his leadership is needed.

  • Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton: The General Electric Company will likely remain very active on Capitol Hill, spreading its faulty message that this cleanup won't work and shouldn't happen. The corporation will continue to challenge the federal Superfund law, pushing for changes that could hamper the cleanup of the Hudson River and hundreds of others toxic sites across the country. Be aware that GE is a responsible party in more than 100 other federal superfund sites.

In your letter thank members of Congress for supporting the cleanup, stress that you want no more delays and indicate that you back this cleanup because it's good for the Hudson River and good precedent for polluted sites nationally.

  • Reps: To write to the House of Representatives member in your district, use this online form.

  • Your Local Newspaper: Everyone reads letters to the editor, and they are a very valuable way to make your voice heard. In your letter or e-mail, thank the leading public officials who helped make this happen, including Gov. Pataki, Reps. Maurice Hinchey and Michael McNulty, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and EPA Administrator Whitman. Cite the fact that the public and communities up and down the river support the cleanup. Call for the project to proceed without more stalling. State that Scenic Hudson and other environmental groups from the coalition Friends of a Clean Hudson will be watchdogs to see that the dredging is done safely and effectively.

  • GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt: Tell him that this cleanup is an opportunity for GE to be a good corporate citizen. He has a chance to launch a new era for the corporation by cleaning up an old mess. Ask him to have GE demonstrate the corporate leadership in the Hudson Valley that the company is known for in other areas.
