Bob Elliott, Senior Advisor to Riverfront Communities

Bob Elliott, widely known as "Mayor of the Hudson Valley" for his ability to work across party lines, has joined Scenic Hudson as senior advisor. As Scenic Hudson works to shape environmentally and economically healthy riverfront communities along the Hudson, the responsibilities of the recently retired mayor of Croton-on-Hudson in Westchester County, will include enhancing the organization's work with elected officials at all levels of government from New York City to Albany.

"Bob's proven abilities in working with community and business leaders will give a powerful boost to Scenic Hudson's progress in helping revitalize waterfront communities. He is respected throughout the valley for his expertise in creating economic opportunity built on a healthy environment," said Ned Sullivan, president of Scenic Hudson. "Bob's strengths in collaboration and negotiation will help fuel Scenic Hudson's success in protecting and restoring the Hudson River and its magnificent landscapes as a national treasure and vital public resource.

Mr. Elliott will continue his role as director of the New York Planning Federation - which trains and provides technical assistance to New York State cities, towns and villages - and share his time with Scenic Hudson. Mayor of Croton from 1991 until 2005, he also is past president of the New York Conference of Mayors; the Tri-County Officials, which includes the Municipalities of Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties; the Westchester Municipal Officials Association; and was co-chairman of Westchester's Council of Government. In addition, he has served on the small cities committee of the National League of Cities.

He is heralded for fostering a bottom-up approach to regional planning and waterfront economic development as the founder and past chairman of Historic River Towns of Westchester, a 13-community consortium. On related fronts, Mr. Elliott authored the New York Conference of Mayors Sustainable Communities Initiative, is the former chair of the Hudson Valley Tourism Development Council, and currently serves as the vice chair of the New York Main Street Alliance. He has been the director of Economic Development and headed the Industrial Development Agency for Westchester County and was president of the Westchester Convention and Visitors Bureau.

He is a board member of many regional organizations, including Hudson Valley Greenway Council, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Management Plan Advisory Board, and the Hudson River Foundation. He served on Gov. George E. Pataki's Task Forces for Access to the Hudson River and Local Government Reform and presently is a member of the New York State Legislature's Rural Land Use Advisory Committee.

A leading creator of intermunicipal and public/private partnerships, Mr. Elliott was one of the organizers and president of the New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal, a corporation owned by and insuring more than 600 counties, cities, villages and towns in New York State. This company often is cited as New York's best example of a public/private partnership. Also, he recently organized the New York Municipal Wind Buyers group that was given a leadership award by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
