Future development is inevitable; however, its negative impacts on our environment and region are not. Unbridled growth threatens our air and water quality, clogs our roads and highways, and results in tax increases to cover additional costs of servicing sprawling development. Proper land-use planning can help preserve and enhance our irreplaceable resources, and our sense of place while minimizing negative environmental and community impacts of growth.
Scenic Hudson works closely with local residents, elected officials, developers, and regional and state entities to help ensure that the Hudson Valley's picturesque countryside and historic villages retain their extraordinary beauty and character for generations to come. We proactively promote planning and design standards that protect scenic views and historic resources, preserve working lands, counteract sprawl, promote walkable and revitalized community centers and mitigate environmental impacts of new development.
Scenic Hudson's initiatives to encourage "Smart Growth" and sound planning on both a local and regional level can help provide quality communities for our families to live and work without sacrificing the quality of life that makes the Hudson Valley special. Scenic Hudson advocates for intermunicipal cooperation and collaboration to protect open space and plan future growth, for the implementation of the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area goals that balance environmental protection with sustainable economic revitalization based on the region's historic, natural and scenic assets.
