It Might Be a Brownfield If...

How do you identify a brownfield?

Look for signs of potential contamination such as:

  • Old, dilapidated buildings
  • Broken windows and glass
  • Garbage or rubble
  • Old barrels or storage tanks
  • Old electrical equipment
  • Sickly or no vegetation
  • Unusual odors
  • Oddly-colored soil and/or water

When performing a visual assessment of a site, be sure not to trespass on private property. Take an inventory from a nearby road or public area.

Keep in mind that the characteristics listed above indicate the potential for contamination, but do not automatically mean the site is a brownfield.
