Where in the Valley is Reed Sparling? (October 2008)
And the ANSWER IS...
Our congratulations to Denise Doring VanBuren of Chelsea for being the first to respond to last month's "Where in the Valley is Reed Sparling" contest. Denise recognized Reed as being at Mount Beacon Park (Dutchess County).
The stairs at Mount Beacon Park in Beacon, Dutchess County, follow the route of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway, once one of the Hudson Valley's most popular tourist destinations. Created by the Otis Elevator Company of Yonkers, the railway was the world's steepest when it opened in 1902. Passengers disembarked at the summit to enjoy a casino, dance hall and hotel. Since the railway closed in 1975, you've had to furnish your own power to reach the top. The manmade attractions are long gone, but the panoramic views are definitely worth the effort.
