Citizen Science
Volunteer Herring and Eel Monitoring
The Hudson River Estuary Program and Scenic Hudson are working with volunteers to monitor herring and American eel in Black Creek Preserve (Ulster County) from March 27 to June 1, 2011. Herring volunteers will observe the creek to see if, where and when spawning runs occur. Those interested in eels will use nets and trap devices to catch juvenile glass eels, which are counted, weighed and released unharmed. Your data may help biologists discover why populations of these important fish are declining.
