People Who Make a Difference: Brother Yusuf Burgess

As a youth growing up in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects, Brother Yusuf Burgess frequently visited a local park to escape into nature. Aware of how these experiences helped him overcome many hardships, Brother Yusuf dedicated his life to connecting inner city children, families and communities to the outdoors.

Poster Artist Angie Petersen: “Prior to DCC, I studied graphic design at the Dutchess BOCES Career and Technical Institute where I was inducted into the National Art Honors Society and the National Technical Honors Society. My goal is to be a fine graphic artist and have my work shown internationally.”

Words of Inspiration

“I often reflect back to my early childhood in Prospect Park, when my world was fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. I know now that there was an innate part of me that was drawn to nature. Yet many of today’s children are growing up in busy cities without nearby parks or ‘special places’ to experience the beautiful and awe-inspiring. They stand to lose a very important part of what it is to be human.” —Brother Yusuf Burgess
