Eel monitoring

Learn about the mysterious life cycle of this fish that swims thousands of miles to grow up in a Hudson River tributary, and receive training to join the annual eel count at Scenic Hudson’s Black Creek Preserve.

Since 2008, the NYSDEC has spearheaded this project to record eels living along the Hudson River estuary. Volunteers — including families and school groups —will catch, count, and weigh juvenile eels before releasing them unharmed. Data recorded helps researchers determine how rapidly eel populations are declining.
