Senior Accountant

Reporting to: Director of Finance

Mission of Position: The Senior Accountant’s primary responsibility is to support business operations through timely and accurate financial reporting. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for general ledger and sub-ledger management.  

Qualifications:          

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration required
  • 3-5 years’ work experience in accounting; not-for-profit background preferred
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP
  • Strong accounting and Excel skills required
  • Experience with accounting software is required
  • Must be a self-starter and quick learner
  • Outstanding problem solving skills and attention to detail are key for this role
  • Must be able to work well as part of a team; be able to lift 30+ pounds
  • Commitment to Scenic Hudson’s mission and environmental justice
  • Must be able to handle a wide array of technical issues including but not limited to installation, training and troubleshooting.

Principle Responsibilities Include:

Accounts Payable

  • Maintain allocation methodology for all expenses
  • Review, code and process invoices and check requests on a weekly basis
  • Reconcile monthly credit card statement and process payment
  • Maintain purchasing log and purchase order forms to perform three-way matching for AP processing
  • Track spending trends and recommend ways to reduce costs
  • Implement and manage new accounts payable interface

Cash Receipts and Receivables

  • Prepare weekly bank deposits and reconcile cash receipts
  • Record cash receipts in accounting software including stock donations
  • Serve as primary liaison to Development Office for ongoing fundraising income reconciliations

Accounting and Audit

  • Prepare adjusting entries for period-end close process
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and sub-ledgers, including but not limited to: Cash, Receivables, Prepaid Expenses, Fixed Assets, and Accounts Payable
  • Support investment portfolio management and reporting
  • Perform detailed analysis and reporting as needed
  • Complete schedules and reconciliations to support the annual audit and financial reporting process
  • Assist with annual 990 tax filing for all entities

Budgeting and Expense Reporting

  • Prepare monthly budget reports for program directors
  • Identify and research budget to actual discrepancies
  • Prepare President’s expense report on a quarterly basis for Board approval
  • Assist with reconciliation and tracking of ongoing capital projects

Compliance Reporting

  • Work closely with Director of Finance & CFOO to monitor and update policies and procedures
  • Contribute to implementation of new accounting systems and internal controls
  • Complete 1099 filing, property tax schedules, and ad hoc reporting

Compensation: Full-time, salary range $75k – $78k, commensurate with experience. Robust
benefits package.
