View of the newly protected Stuyvesant Woods property.Robert Rodriguez, Jr. A mix of grassland and hardwood forest located within the Columbia-Greene North Scenic Area of Statewide Significance, the property adjoins the 452-acre Boll Farm conserved by Scenic Hudson and The Nature Conservancy in 2003. Its open meadows provide prime bird habitat. The land also borders a stream that flows into the Hudson River half a mile away; several ponds constitute the headwaters of another stream. The entire property, which was for sale at the time of the transaction, contains Soils of Statewide Significance or U.S. Department of Agriculture-designated Prime Soils. Our purchase of development rights guarantees the land can always support Stuyvesant’s agriculture-based economy while contributing to its rural charm. Since Scenic Hudson initiated plans to conserve a “critical mass” of working farms in the town in 2000, we’ve safeguarded more than 3,000 acres encompassing 11 farms. Additional farmland in Stuyvesant has been preserved by the Columbia Land Conservancy, Open Space Institute and The Nature Conservancy. The purchase is part of Scenic Hudson’s collaborative campaign to Save the Land That Matters Most, protecting 65,000 acres of great scenic, ecological and agricultural significance.
