SUMMARY:Webinar: New Leaders for the Hudson River and the Clean Water Act at 50
DESCRIPTION:Introducing Tracy Brown\, Riverkeeper’s new President and Hudson Riverkeeper\, and David Toman\, the new Executive Director of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, joining Ned Sullivan\, President of Scenic Hudson for over 23 years\, in a conversation with activist and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster. \nIn this historic Earth Day online event\, three pioneering Hudson River environmental organizations come together to discuss the 50th anniversary of the landmark Clean Water Act. Scenic Hudson\, Riverkeeper and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, were all founded in the 1960s to protect the Hudson River from the massive pollution that was destroying it and rescue the dying river. \n50 years later\, two of these organizations have new leaders and all three have new visions for the future of the Hudson River. \nThe modern environmental movement was founded on the Hudson River in large part because of these courageous grassroots groups. Each organization brings different strengths and strategies to protecting the river and they work together to harness the power of the Clean Water Act and other tools to protect our waterways. \nWe invite all to join us for this free online event to learn more about each organization and get to know our leaders\, and to learn about the history and the future of the Clean Water Act.  \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Meeting New York's Ambitious Climate Goals: Conflict\, Compromise\, and NIMBY in Renewable Energy Siting
DESCRIPTION:10th Annual Woodstock Land Conservancy Film & Discussion Series \nIn 2019\, NYS passed the most ambitious\, hopeful\, and solution-oriented legislation in the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2030\, 70% of our electricity must come from renewables. In our part of the Hudson Valley\, this means solar farms. Where will they go\, who will make the decisions\, and what will be the competing demands of agriculture\, housing\, tourism\, and aesthetics? \nWe all want action on climate change. How do we balance people’s reservations against the pressing need to act now? Engage with short videos and live interviews plus Q&A with some of the climate leaders in the Hudson Valley\, including Jen Metzger\, former State Senator and current advisor to New Yorkers for Clean Power\, and Audrey Friedrichsen\, Land Use and Environmental Advocacy Attorney for Scenic Hudson. \nRegister for this program here:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUtduisqTspGdIuBPmaASmXfaqGGgiGiD10

SUMMARY:Stop the Plant: Public Hearing
DESCRIPTION:Danskammer has appealed the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC’s) October 27th decision to deny their fracked gas power plant its air permit. Tell decision-makers to uphold the DEC’s decision! \nHOW TO HELP: \n\nSpeak out at a virtual public comment hearing on Tuesday\, February 15 — for more details and to register\, click here. The deadline to register is February 11th. \nYou can also send written comments by Tuesday\, February 22.\n\nThis is a last-ditch effort to keep alive a project that would emit millions of tons of climate-warming gases\, spew cancer-causing pollutants\, and harm environmental justice communities in and around Newburgh. \nThe DEC’s comprehensive decision to deny Danskammer’s air permit rests on solid legal ground — but let’s take advantage of every opportunity to ensure the plant doesn’t get built.

SUMMARY:Virtual Public Meeting: Orange County Climate Resilience Planning
DESCRIPTION:Do storms cause flooding in your neighborhood more often? \nAre long summer heatwaves cramping your outdoor fun? \nIf you live in Orange County\, you can help create solutions for these and other growing climate impacts. \nTo learn how\, attend a virtual meeting hosted by the county Planning Department. \nThe department is developing a County Resilience Plan — to identify local risks from climate change and prioritize projects to address them — and it wants residents to participate. This meeting will provide information about the process and ways you can get involved. There also will be time for questions and comments. \nOrange County has experienced millions of dollars of losses due to historic flood events and storm surges\, while the number of heat advisories grows annually. Climate change is projected to increase the number and severity of events like these\, making this plan — and your input — essential to help county communities adapt to the future.

SUMMARY:How Do You Solve a Problem Like the Climate?
DESCRIPTION:What is being done in the region to prepare and ensure that our communities and systems will be resilient enough to withstand change? \nIn this conversation\, The River Newsroom will bring together expert panelists working on a broad range of climate solutions throughout the region\, and invite them to talk about their work—and the change that lies within our grasp\, even in the midst of a complex global disaster. \nClimate change isn’t coming—it’s here. Average temperatures are rising\, and extreme weather is intensifying. The Hudson River has risen a foot over the past century\, and is on track to rise six feet or more by 2100. To protect communities in the Hudson Valley and Catskills from the worst impacts\, we need to decarbonize the economy. But we also need to adapt to the change that has already begun. \nREGISTER HERE \nModerated by Lissa Harris\, staff writer at The River Newsroom. \nCo-moderated by Jen Metzger\, former New York state Senator and policy advisor for New Yorkers for Clean Power. Jen Metzger\, PhD\, served in the NY State Senate in 2019-2020\, and currently advises on climate and energy policy with the nonprofit organization\, New Yorkers for Clean Power. Prior to her election to the State Senate\, she served for over a decade in local government in the Town of Rosendale\, and cofounded and directed Citizens for Local Power\, an organization dedicated to fighting unfair utility rates and practices and helping communities shift to a locally based clean energy economy. \nPanelists for this conversation include: \n\nBen Dobson\, founder of Hudson Carbon and farm manager of Stone House Grain\nNava Tabak\, director of science\, climate\, and stewardship at Scenic Hudson\nAndrew Willner\, sail freight advocate and founder of the Center for Post Carbon Logistics\n\nAdditional panelists to be announced. \nThis event also marks the launch of The River Newsroom’s Climate Lab\, a new project focused on covering climate impacts and solutions in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region.

SUMMARY:Danskammer & The Community: A Free Online Roundtable Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community discussion on the proposed Danskammer gas power plant in the Town of Newburgh (Orange County). Hear how this plant will affect you and your community\, and see what we can do together to stop the plant.  \nWhere: Online Webinar\nWhen: June 23\, 6:00 p.m.  – 7:30 p.m.\nRSVP via bit.ly/june23roundtable \nThe existing plant operates during peak hours\, providing energy only during the highest-demand periods — when temperatures are extremely hot or cold — but the new plant would run nearly all of the time. This will not only jeopardize public health\, but increase pollution and intensify climate change. \nOften those who bear the brunt of impacts from polluting projects and policies are not heard. It is about time we talk about the facts and take action. Tune in to hear from community voices already engaged in both environmental and social justice work — including a faith-based organization\, a local business\, and members of Latinx and Indigenous communities — so that we can lift our voices to let decision-makers know we do not need or want this polluting plant!

Saffeir\, Maine Forest Carbon Task Force\nDr. Barbara Glenn\, Chief Executive Officer\, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture\nBriana Alfaro\, Soil Carbon Field Researcher\, NOFA-NY & Soul Fire Farm\n\n\n\nSession descriptions:\nFriday\, April 23\, 10:00 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nI. Overview of the Sequestration Opportunity: This panel will focus on the critical role that sequestration in natural and working lands must play to help states achieve their carbon reduction goals\, particularly as an increasing number of states strive to become net neutral by midcentury. Presenters will provide an overview of recent research from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, National Academy of Sciences and others that have defined a global opportunity for sequestration to provide one-third of the cost-effective emissions reductions needed to keep the Earth’s temperature below 2 degrees Celsius. They will also summarize strategies outlined by the US Climate Alliance to achieve this goal on a national level while enhancing collaboration between states and the federal government\, and a snapshot of what the latest science can confirm and has yet to discover about the potential of these strategies. \nII. Roundtable on State Healthy Soils Legislation/Programs: Many Northeastern states\, including Maryland\, Massachusetts\, Vermont and New York\, have established or are planning to implement healthy soils programs. This panel\, consisting of state legislators\, academics\, and representatives from executive agencies\, will provide an overview of these efforts and any quantifiable results that they can share\, as well as a discussion of the challenges they have encountered in terms of funding\, farmer outreach\, and methodologies. \nIII. Roundtable on Forest Carbon Opportunities: This panel will feature a discussion of existing state programs and other innovative efforts to design accessible\, economically feasible forest carbon storage programs for small-to-medium sized landowners\, and in urban areas. \nSaturday\, April 24\, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. \nIV. An Overview of Public and Private Carbon Offset Market Opportunities\, Methodologies and Constraints: In the United States\, California is the only state that operates a compliance offsets market\, as part of its economy-wide cap-and-trade program\, but the voluntary offsets market has been growing rapidly. These efforts could receive a significant push from the Biden administration\, which wants to provide some $30 billion in aid from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation to pay farmers to capture carbon in soil\, and has proposed creating a carbon bank that would buy credits from farmers and sell them to corporations for offsets. In the private sector\, a growing list of companies have announced major investments in nature-based offsets to meet internal carbon reduction goals and showcase their green credentials. This session will include discussions with project developers and third-party verifiers that are operating in the offsets space\, and with corporate representatives that are supporting development of offset markets in the private sector in the Northeast. \nV. State/Federal Collaboration: The Biden administration has outlined the goal of “decarbonizing the food and agricultural sector and leveraging agriculture to remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it in the ground.” At the same time\, the President has proposed to conserve 30% of the nation’s open spaces\, including forests and other reserves\, by the year 2030\, as central to his climate strategies. This session will include discussions with state agency leaders and federal policy makers who will summarize ideas and strategies being developed to coordinate joint state-federal action. \nVI. Moving Forward: Non-governmental partnerships promoting climate resilience and carbon sequestration are coordinating activities between scientists\, land managers\, conservation groups and technical service providers. The Northeast Carbon Alliance is one such organization that has created a model for collaboration across Northeastern states. This session will include a brief presentation of the Northeast Carbon Alliance model\, followed by a facilitated discussion about observations made during this conference\, identification of synergies among actions in the state\, federal and private spheres\, and potential policy concepts to enhance collaboration across state borders.
