Rock Solid

Share:

Did you know that Storm King Mountain has a rock named after it? Or that Storm King granite, which underlies the mountain and other peaks in the Hudson Highlands, happens to be one of the oldest rocks in the world? It dates back more than 1 billion years.

Storm King granite also is one of the hardest rocks, as workmen found out when drilling the railroad tunnel through Breakneck Ridge in the late 1840s. It took them 17 months to complete the 840-foot pass-through. That’s a rate of less than two feet a day.
