Citizens are concerned about environmental cleanup
- Proposed cleanups would leave lead concentrations up to 25 times higher than state guidelines.
- Contamination studies don’t address plans for cleaning up other toxins, including arsenic and barium, and fail to analyze whether these poisons flow into the Hudson River.
Scenic Hudson sees some potential solutions
- Lead cleanup must follow state guidelines.
- Further studies are needed to assess health risks to humans and wildlife, and develop a plan – with public input – for long-term contamination monitoring.
Years of heavy industry on the Sleepy Hollow waterfront created significant environmental cleanup challenges.
“The poor people won’t have an opportunity to live there. The ones who are going to buy there are the engineers, doctors. But the people from town won’t be able to buy there or live there.”
– Orestes Ledesma, Sleepy Hollow resident, The Journal News, May 18, 2005
