Pia Ruisi-Besares

Director of Science, Climate & Stewardship

Pia has been part of the Scenic Hudson team since 2022 and is responsible for ecological management and stewardship. She designs and implements habitat restoration projects on Scenic Hudson properties and helps facilitate land use for research. Pia also represents the organization in regional working groups, including the Hudson River Estuary Management Advisory Committee.

A forest ecologist and natural resource management professional, Pia has worked in a variety of U.S. ecosystems, including Alaska and Hawaii. Prior to joining Scenic Hudson, she helped develop projects to address forest health issues across the northeast as part of the University of Vermont’s Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Cooperative. 

Pia holds a B.A. in Environmental Science from Skidmore College and a M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa. She grew up in Kingston, N.Y., and is happy to be working in her home region.
