Huckleberry Point
Elka Park (Green County)
Why we love it
To earn a gigantic view in the Catskills, you generally need to climb a rather large mountain. Huckleberry Point is a notable exception to this rule — it offers a dramatic eastward vista across the far-off Hudson River from atop a rocky outcrop NOT located on a mountain’s summit. The hike isn’t short — it’s 4.5 miles round trip — but it also doesn’t require any dramatic ascents. That’s not to say it’s flat, but it’s about as close to flat as you get in the Catskills. For a view like this, that’s a pretty good deal.
More to explore
For a large mountain to climb, two loom close by: Indian Head Mountain and Twin Mountain, which you can “bag” together via an 8.4-mile, gut-busting loop. Or you can head to nearby Saugerties and find some food to replace the calories spent getting to Huckleberry Point.
