Trevor Zoo

Millbrook (Dutchess County)

Why we love it

It’s no Bronx Zoo, but the Trevor Zoo, at the Millbrook School in rural Dutchess County, has its pluses. There’s no jostling with crowds for an up-close look at its star attractions, and the admission is extremely reasonable (and parking free). Best of all, though small, it has a remarkable variety of animals, more than 180 from five continents. It’s a superlative place to introduce young people to their planet’s fellow inhabitants — from local species like the bobcat to an Australian wallaby — without exhausting them, or you. (And yes, it has a gift shop.)

More to explore

Not far away, the Village of Millbrook offers many dining options as well as interesting shops. If the kids have energy to spare, let them explore the Fern Glen at the nearby Cary Institute. It features native species arrayed around a pond and swamp, with trails frequently crossing boardwalks.
