MORE INFORMATION

What is a hate crime?

Under New York State Law, a person commits a hate crime when they target a victim because of a perception or belief about the victim’s race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religious practice, age, disability, or sexual orientation, even if that perception or belief is incorrect.

Hate crimes can be committed against an individual, against a group, or against public or private property.

What if I see graffiti or other vandalism containing hate speech or hate-related symbols?

Please report any vandalism to Scenic Hudson at info@scenichudson.org or by calling 845-473-4440, ext. 247 (checked Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm). Graffiti, for example, is a crime in New York. If the graffiti contains hate speech or symbols, it is considered a hate crime. If you can, please send us a photo to help us find the location. If you haven’t reported it to the local police, Scenic Hudson staff will.

Please help keep everyone safe by reporting any biased or hateful messages you may find. Hate speech and hate-related vandalism will be reported to the local precinct and may lead to charges against the perpetrators.

We are working to make Scenic Hudson parks feel more connected and inclusive. One way we are doing this is by sharing stories of people who visit and enjoy the parks. We invite you to SHARE YOUR LOVE for Scenic Hudson parks (through photos, stories, and videos) or explore what others have posted.
