Ashokan Reservoir Promenade

Olivebridge (Ulster County)

Why we love it

It’s paved and flat, with scenery that’s drop-dead gorgeous, making it perfect for the casual jogger or a hardcore runner looking to break a personal best. The 2.8-mile trail (great for bikes, walkers and in-line skaters as well) hugs the southern shore of the reservoir, which supplies 40 percent of New York City’s water. (Eleven villages were demolished to create it.) Across its windswept waves, the Catskills loom in their seasonal splendor. Don’t be surprised if you spot a bald eagle.

More to explore

Not far from the parking area, don’t miss the Ashokan Fountain. It shoots water high into the air, creating a cooling spray that’s welcome on hot summer days.
