Bear Hill Preserve

Cragsmoor (Ulster County)

Why we love it

By rights, you should have to burn hundreds of calories to earn jaw-dropping panoramic views, but a 1.5-mile round-trip stroll atop the flat Shawangunk Ridge is all it takes to reach scenic nirvana at Bear Hill Preserve. There’s also a treat in store for intrepid explorers in search of a challenge — the Grapefruit Squeeze, where you can try your hand at some mild spelunking (or play peekaboo) among giant rocks that have tumbled down the ridge. The best part: The trail is rarely crowded at this hidden gem.

More to explore
