Boscobel House and Gardens
Garrison (Putnam County)
Why we love it
Boscobel allows you to explore nature tamed and in the rough. Landscaped gardens, an allée of maple trees and an orchard featuring heirloom apple varieties surround one of the nation’s finest examples of Federal period (early 19th-century) architecture. Sublime views from the picnic-friendly lawn in front of the mansion encompass a wide expanse of the Hudson River and Highlands. For a walk on the “wilder” side, head into the forest on the 1.25-mile Frances Stevens Reese Woodland Trail, where benches and rustic pavilions encourage halting to enjoy more spectacular vistas.
More to explore
Nearby Cold Spring features an enticing array of shops and restaurants on its historic Main Street as well as Scenic Hudson’s West Point Foundry Preserve, which contains the remains of an ironworks that manufactured cannons during the Civil War and pipes for New York City’s water system. Interpretive features tell the story of the foundry and the land’s remarkable ecological renewal.
