Depot Hill

Poughquag (Dutchess County)

Why we love it

If you’re looking for a view that doesn’t require scaling a mountain, the section of Appalachian Trail that runs from Depot Hill Multiple Use Area to the overlook on Mount Egbert might just be the ticket. The 3-mile round-trip hike traverses rolling terrain and rewards hikers with a westerly view to the Hudson Highlands and Catskills — making it a primo spot to enjoy a sunset. The trail also passes the Morgan Stewart Memorial Shelter, giving day hikers a chance to check out the accommodations of through-hikers on their Georgia-to-Maine journey.

More to explore

The stretch of Appalachian Trail just north of Depot Hill also visits many excellent local day-hiking destinations, including Nuclear Lake, Cat Rocks and the Great Swamp.
