Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry
Ossining (Westchester County), Haverstraw (Rockland County)
Why we love it
What child wouldn’t love riding on a boat across the widest expanse of the Hudson River? What parent wouldn’t like to provide this treat without breaking the bank? Hop aboard the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry (top fare $5) and there will be smiles all around. Though basically a commuter service, anyone can ride it. Best bet: Grab the boat in Ossining in the late afternoon, enjoy the 20-minute ride, and then follow the path to Haverstraw’s Engel Park, where a playground and sprinkler area will keep the kids happy until you decide to set sail for home.
FYI
As well as being architecturally appealing, downtown Haverstraw is enjoying a culinary renaissance. If time permits, grab a bite in one of its many restaurants.
