Overmountain Conservation Area
Ancram (Columbia County)
Why we love it
Want to experience the Taconic Mountains — along the Hudson Valley’s eastern boundary — without scaling them? Hike this Columbia Land Conservancy gem. Its ridge-top trails afford super views of these peaks (especially in late fall and winter), but won’t leave you gasping. Stone walls tell the story of the land’s past agricultural use, while the variety of rocks in them provides compelling evidence of the region’s geological upheavals. Save the best for last: A stop at the Yellow Trail’s gazebo, siting at the high point of a wildflower-filled meadow. The 360-degree vista, including the Taconics and Catskills, is among the valley’s best.
More to explore
The quaint nearby Village of Millerton features a variety of interesting shops and eateries, including Harney & Sons, where you can sample some 250 varieties of fine tea.
