Shingle Gully Ice Caves — Sam’s Point Preserve

Ellenville (Ulster County)

Why we love it

As adventures go, this hike can’t be beat — and the only way to take it is via guided tour. Some of it follows narrow paths, but much requires steep rock scrambles and bushwhacking — so it’s recommended only for those up to a strenuous trek of five or more hours. For all the exertion, you get to roam through towering rock fissures and explore caves where ice lingers into the summer. Massive boulders topped by ferns and mosses offer Instagram-worthy photos throughout, while mountain laurel puts on a colorful show in spring and huckleberry bushes brim with fruit during the summer. In a word, wow!
