Ashokan Rail Trail
Ulster County
Why we love it
The Hudson Valley’s newest rail trail has history on its side: It traces the route of the old Ulster & Delaware Railroad along the Ashokan Reservoir. It features a packed gravel surface, generous width and level course — also big pluses. But what gives it instant top-tier status among local rail trails is 11.5 miles of scenic splendor, including serene woodlands, dramatic rock cuts, an expansive wetland (crossed via boardwalk) and views across the shimmering reservoir to the Catskills’ peaks. Thanks to New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection for allowing the trail to pass through its land.
