Lake Awosting — Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Kerhonkson (Ulster County)

Why we love it

If you can’t find space to lay your towel at Lake Minnewaska — its beach fills up fast — hike or bike to Lake Awosting, another of the Shawangunks’ pristine “sky lakes.” The carriage road leading to it ascends gradually, so the 3.5-mile trek won’t exhaust you, but will inspire an immediate plunge upon arrival. The “beach” is a huge rock slab that slopes gently into the water. The lake stays cool all summer and gorgeous scenery surrounds it, making this a refreshing destination for the body and the eyes.

More to explore

Carriage roads throughout the preserve afford breathtaking views of the Shawangunks escarpment and outlying lands. In June, the mountain laurel is spectacular.
