Why we love it:
Lake Sophia is the perfect place to enjoy a little nature, a little adventure, and plenty of time in the water — just minutes from downtown Kingston in Sojourner Truth State Park! There’s something for everyone in the former quarry’s stunning spring-fed waters, whether you’re looking to take a dip in the shallow swimming crib (think floating pool!) or make a splash in the deep-water swim area. The lake features an accessible walkway from the shore to the swimming deck, a ramp from the deck into the pool, and lifeguards, helping visitors of all ages and abilities to safely enjoy the water. When it’s time to dry off, the bathhouse pavilion includes restrooms and showers so you can comfortably explore the rest of the state park, which Scenic Hudson helped create after conserving the land in 2019. Pack your swimsuit, grab your floaties, and practice your best cannonball because the lake is calling!

Before you go, check the state park page for seasonal swimming hours and updates. Parking is limited, so consider leaving your car at home. Bike in via the Hudson River Brickyard Trail (part of the Empire State Trail) or catch a ride on the free Ulster County Nature Bus, which runs on alternating Saturdays during the summer. If you choose to drive, park only in designated spaces so roadways stay clear in case of emergency. Entry is $8 per vehicle or free with an Empire Pass.
