Overview

A great “outdoor classroom” for introducing kids to nature.

ESOPUS, Ulster County (130 acres) — For a family-friendly hike, you can’t beat Black Creek Preserve. Yes, the steep uphill climb at the start may make the under-10 contingent groan, but they’ll love crossing the suspension bridge that spans the creek and skipping stones on the Hudson River shoreline. In between, have them watch out for wildlife — from blueback herring, which journey from the ocean to deposit their eggs in Black Creek, to bald eagles.

NEW UPDATES!

This stunning preserve along the Hudson River—a local favorite since 1999—just got even better. With the addition of a 12-acre section along the Hudson River, this natural gem now spans a whopping 142 acres of breathtaking views, rolling meadows, water access, and exciting new features.

What’s new and improved?
✨An expanded parking lot with easy access to the trail head

✨A new trailhead kiosk to guide your adventure (this is the first designated segment in the John Burroughs Black Creek Trail!)

✨A spacious 20×20-foot riverfront pavilion to take in the views

✨A restored 1840s gazebo perfect for relaxation and photos

Bilingual informational signs throughout the park, making this experience accessible —and serving as a model for over 45 other parks!

Whether you’re strolling along the new trails or soaking in the stunning river views, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
